Why does your dustbin still smell after washing it? Garbage odour explained
You scrubbed it. Soap, brush, two rinses, then a few hours in the sun. Fresh bag in. By evening the dustbin smell is back like you did nothing.
It’s not your fault. Washing sorts out the bin. The smell comes from what goes inside it.
What is actually smelling
Think about what goes in there. Peels, leftover sabzi, tea leaves, eggshells, maybe some curd that went bad. It’s all wet and it’s all full of bacteria. Close the lid, add a bit of heat, and bacteria break it down and give off gas. One of those gases is hydrogen sulphide, the one that smells like rotten eggs. In summer and the monsoon this happens a lot faster.
So you wash the bin, throw in fresh waste, and the same thing starts again. That’s the whole cycle.
Spots you probably skip
The bottom corners, where liquid from wet waste collects. The underside of the lid. The rim. The bag too, because a tiny hole is enough for liquid to leak down. And the floor around the bin, which nobody checks. Old scratched plastic smells more than a new smooth bin does.
Why the freshener doesn’t help
It puts a scent on top of the smell. The gas is still there, so when the scent fades, the smell is back. Often the same afternoon.
A garbage odour spray that neutralises the smell works on the smell itself. That’s what BioClean ODONOX is made for. You spray it inside the empty bin and under the lid, and the waste in the bag gets a spray too. The pack has the exact directions, so go by those. What to do and how often
Wet waste should go out every day. Waiting for the bag to fill up is a common mistake. If the waste is dripping, let it drain a little before it goes in the bag.
Once a week, give the bin a proper wash with hot water and dish soap, and get into the base and under the lid. Then let it dry all the way, because a damp bin brings the smell straight back. A quick spray inside before the new bag goes in helps, and the lid should stay shut, with the bin kept away from the stove.
Can garbage smell actually harm you?
In a normal home bin, the gas is too low to be toxic. It can still make some people feel sick or give them a headache. The real problem is pests. Flies, cockroaches and rats all love a smelly bin.
If you have a septic tank and the rotten egg smell is strong, the bin may not be the cause. This post explains the rotten egg smell from a septic tank and when to worry.
Still smells with the bin outside?
Take the bin out of the room for an hour and see what happens. If the smell is still there, it’s probably not the bin. Check the sink drain, because grease in the pipe smells a lot like garbage. An enzyme based drain cleaner clears it from the pipe walls.
FAQs
Why do I smell garbage in my house when the bin is empty?
Because the smell doesn’t stay in the waste. It soaks into the plastic, the bag and even the floor under the bin. Wash and dry all of it, floor included, and if the smell is still around after that, have a look at the sink drain.
How do I get rid of the smell of garbage in my home?
Get the wet waste out daily, wash and dry the bin properly, and spray the inside before the new bag goes in. Keeping the lid closed helps more than you’d think.
What is the fastest way to remove dustbin smell?
Empty it, wash it with hot water and dish soap, dry it in the sun and spray the inside before the next bag. It isn’t a big job, but the drying part matters.
Does garbage odour spray really work?
A perfumed spray only covers the smell for a few hours, and then it’s back. One made to neutralise garbage odour works on the smell itself, so the effect lasts longer.
Is the smell of garbage harmful?
Not in a home bin, usually. It can make you feel sick or give you a headache, and it brings flies and cockroaches, which is the worse part. Throwing out the waste daily takes care of both.
